Teen HIV Prevention

HIV Statistics in our Area

In the United States, 1 in 5 new HIV diagnoses were in young people aged 13-24 years. Only 10% of U.S. high school students have ever been tested for HIV. In 2016, 17% of the 4,972 persons diagnosed with HIV in Florida were young people (ages 13–24). Youth diagnosed with HIV vary by age, race, and mode of exposure but certain groups are more at risk than others. Sixty percent of all people living with HIV in Palm Beach County are black, 24% are white, while 15% are Hispanic.

How PBCSAC plans to help

PBCSAC HIV prevention/education and testing project will utilize the NIDA community-based outreach model to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS amongst young people and current or former drug users. PBCSAC will also implement community PROMISE which is a community level HIV/STD prevention intervention that relies on role model stories and peer advocates to reduce the high-risk behaviors and increase engagement related to the HIV continuum of care. Together, the long-term vision of our prevention services is to reduce the risk of HIV transmission, reduce the rates of substance use among our populations of focus and ultimately reduce new infections and addictions.
